Treatment of dry-eye syndrome using intense pulsed light (IPL) technology.

The Lynton Excelight is a new, state-of-the-art IPL instrument designed for use in treating meibomian gland dysfunction (also known as dry eye disease, tear film instability, posterior blepharitis etc).

We are pleased to be able to offer this treatment at The Eyesmith, and help our patients with more severe forms of dry eye syndrome.

What happens during IPL treatment for dry eyes?

The treatment is Simple & fast and only takes a few minutes.

You will be comfortably seated on a treatment chair. Ceramic eyewear protection shells are adjusted on your eyes and then optical gel is applied on the cheekbone and the temporal areas.

A series of five flashes are applied under one eye, starting from the inner side out to the temple area, using the required power. Power is adjusted, based on skin type.

The same process is then repeated under the other eye.

We now also offer treatment with IPL for the upper lids. For this, we need to use a large occluding contact lens: the eye is numbed with an anasthetic drop and the lens is placed on the eye by the clinician. The treatment is then safely performed on the lids and the lens is removed. We are happy to discuss this further - please ask for further details.

How IPL stops the Dry Eye Cycle of Inflammation

IPL can help:

  • By restoring meibomian glands: Improvement in meibomian gland functioning and structure

  • By improving tear volume: Boost tear break up time and decrease osmolarity (saltiness).

  • By reduction in abnormal blood vessels: Shrinking of abnormal blood vessels that add to inflammation.

  • By decreasing demodex: Destruction of demodex mites, which increase inflammation.

  • By reducing inflammatory compounds: Decrease the level of mediators of inflammation.

The cost of this revolutionary treatment, including gland expression is only £175 per treatment (you will need 4). This also includes Gland expression following the treatment.
(The extra cost for upper lid treatment is £75 per session)
