OCT Eye Laser Scanning - inside, outside and through.

At The Eyesmith, we understand the value of using the best instruments to look after your eyes. Hence our investment in REVO OCT and Retinal imaging.

What is OCT?

OCT stands for "Optical Coherence Tomography" and is a complex technology used to measure the eye and, particularly, the layers of the retina. The retina is the light sensitive area at the back of the eye, equivalent to film in a camera or CCD in a digital camera.

An OCT scan is similar to an MRI or CAT scan for the eyes. OCT can image in 3D allowing us to see, sometimes for the first time, problems within your eye that could not easily be seen before.

An OCT scan is quick, easy, safe and requires no input from you the patient.

Optopol RevO NX

Optopol designed the first commercial OCT and have now designed the world’s fastest.

Our Optopol Revo NX OCT enables us to measure down to 0.2 microns and capture 80000 scans a second: it’s detailed and very fast - a truly unique instrument.

We image the macula, the optic nerve, measure the cornea, the iris angle and the length of the eye. We also capture photos.

What can we see with OCT?

An OCT allows us a detailed look at the eye and retina. This should enable us to detect problems at a much earlier stage, usually allowing you better treatment options and a better visual outcome.

Specifically, we are able to look at and monitor the following:

RETINA AND MACULA
A single 3D retina examination with the Revo is enough to perform both retina and glaucoma analysis, based on retinal scans. Software automatically recognizes the retina layers, thus allowing a more precise diagnosis and mapping any changes in the retina’s condition.

GLAUCOMA
The Revo has comprehensive glaucoma analytical tools for quantification of the nerve fiber layer, ganglion layer and optic head, enabling the precise diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma over time. The ability to “subtract” and compare subsequent images allows us to monitor for change.

BIOMETRY OCT
The pinpoint accuracy of the Revo in measuring the length of the eye is important in myopia control and cataract surgery.

TOPOGRAPHY OCT
Mapping the corneal shape, both front and back layers, as well as the thickness using the Revo is invaluable in looking after eyes with corneal disease (such as dystrophies, keratoconus, Fuch’s, etc).

mapping the curves of the eye - Zeiss iProfiler.

what is corneal topography and why is it important?

Corneal topography is a non-invasive medical imaging technique for mapping the surface curvature of the cornea, the outer transparent structure of the eye. Since the cornea is normally responsible for around 70% of the eye's refractive power, its shape is of critical importance in determining the quality of vision and corneal health.

The three-dimensional map created by our Zeiss iProfiler is therefore a valuable aid to us and can assist in the diagnosis and treatment of a number of conditions, in planning cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation, or in guiding the fit of complex contact lenses.

The Zeiss iProfiler also adds additional information from 1500 points to aid in creating the most accurate spectacle lenses for your eyes.

The procedure is carried out in seconds and is completely painless.

Visual Fields - Zeiss Humphrey.

All round vision

The human field of vision is roughly around 180 degrees horizontally and 130 degrees vertically, when using both eyes.

Unfortunately you can lose part or all of your visual field due to many medical conditions such as specific eye conditions (e.g. glaucoma) and other medical conditions (e.g. strokes).

Our Zeiss Humphrey visual field analyser is considered the gold standard in advanced visual field testing (and is the instrument recommended by ophthalmologists). It accurately assesses how wide and sensitive your visual field is. Unlike basic visual field screening, which concentrates on assessing large chunks of your vision at a time, the Humphrey visual field analyser can pick up even very subtle defects in your visual field by analysing each nerve pathway in detail. This allows the early and accurate detection of problems. However, even a perfect visual field should be measured regularly to provide an individual baseline for monitoring future changes, again potentially allowing earlier diagnosis of problems.

PERFECT Frame and Lens fit - ZEISS VISUFIT.

Accurately designs Custom made Spectacle lenses for optimal vision.

Precise measurement.

This instrument is all about ensuring the best vision through accurate measurement of the fitting of your newly chosen frames. The measurements obtained by the Visufit aid accuracy in lens centration and enable custom multifocal lens designs to be manufactured.

Nine mutually calibrated cameras capture a 180° view of the patient’s face in one shot. Measurement data is processed using 45 million points.

  • 3D centration: 180° view with just one shot. No need for a clip-frame.

  • Convergence control: Laser speckle avoids convergences, even at short distance.

  • Precise data: Excellent measurement of back vertex distance, pupillary distance and as worn pantoscopic angle for bespoke lenses.

  • Body posture assistant: Helps to correct unnatural posture.

  • Thick temples overlay: Detects the position of the cornea and measures the back-vertex distance.
